Mountain Workshop, Williamsburg, Kentucky
Photography is invariably a solitary pursuit, but to grow, most of us need the feedback of our piers – I certainly do. This is why I was so pleased to have the opportunity to attend this year’s Mountain Photo Workshop based in Williamsburg, Kentucky.
Documentary Photography Self-Study Blog #3
It’s been two years since I started self-studying documentary photography and photojournalism, and this is only my third blog post. However, I have finished stage one.
10 million a day
In 2021, UK consumers drank 2.5 million litres or 10 million bottles of water per day. That’s a lot of plastic. It’s great that you’re all drinking so much water; good hydration is important. But when you buy bottled water, you are driving a chain that’s having a significant impact on our environment.
Brand Photography with Creative Makers, Cubitts
I've recently completed a branding shoot with creative makers Cubitts. Environmental portraits are one of the aspects of the brand shoot that I most enjoy. I always bring lighting equipment with me, just in case.
Brand photography shoot with usual objections
I recently had a branding shoot with east London-based creative makers, Usual Objections. Their range of bespoke swim and sportswear is built around a desire to make the company as sustainable as possible.
A Night at the Rodeo in Dalton, Georgia
My wife steps in and shuts me up, which considering the circumstances and the twenty-five-foot drop behind me, is fair enough.
Medway Open Studios
As an event photographer, every so often, a job comes along that just fits - that was the case when I was asked to shoot the 10th annual Medway Open Studios.
Documentary Photography Self-Study Blog #2
This is the latest blog post in a series about self-studying Photojournalism and Documentary Photography.
I'm basing my study around the London College of Communication BA in Photojournalism and Documentary Photography.
Documentary Photography Self-Study blog #1
At some point in mid-2021, I was feeling a little discouraged by not being able to work on the projects I'd been planning. So, I turned my attention to improving my knowledge about the field of documentary storytelling in general. This is the first blog post documenting that process.
Documentary Photography: Self-study outline
I've been self-studying to improve my knowledge of documentary photography.
I've been building resources that fit the course outline of a Photojournalism and Documentary Photography BA course. I'll update this page as I progress.
Bespoke Journals: Blurb & Mixam Compared (updated)
A comparison of print-on-demand bespoke softcover journals from Blurb Books and Mixam. An outline of the costs, the quality and how they compare. Part of my series about printing your work for photographers.
Newspaper Movie: Official Secrets
During the build-up to the Iraq war, the US and UK were desperate to get approval for the proposed invasion from the UN, but some of the non-permanent members of the Security Council were reluctant, to say the least. The NSA requested the assistance of GCHQ in getting information on diplomats representing those countries that could be used to ‘encourage’ them to tow the line.
Newspaper Movie: Citizenfour
Citizenfour is a 2014 documentary film directed by Laura Poitras, concerning Edward Snowden and the NSA spying scandal.
The film centres around Poitras and Guardian journalist Glenn Greenwald. It shows the incredible bravery of, 29-year old, Snowden who leaves a long-term relationship, his family, his job and his country, knowing he can never return.
The Table: Feeding the Homeless through a Pandemic
Tony and Vicki Harris have been on a journey that would change their lives, seeing Tony giving away all their money and most of his clothes. It would lead them to start a group that would feed up to 50 people, six nights a week, during the height of the pandemic.
Dungeness: Testing Fomapan 400
By law, photographers in southeast England, with a few days holiday, have to make a pilgrimage to Dungeness, which is how I found myself in, probably, the most COVID-safe environment in this crowded corner of the country.
It gave me an excellent opportunity to test a new-to-me, black and white film, Fomapan 400.
Journal #2: New York
Following my Berlin Journal, in the series ‘Cities I love but can’t visit,’ I bring you, New York. As before, this is the Blurb 6” x 9” Trade Book using their Standard paper with a Softcover.
Newspaper Movies: The Complete List*
As a newspaper obsessive, during the UK’s Covid-19 lockdown, I’ve been compiling and reviewing a list of films set in newspapers. This is the complete list of films I’ve discovered so far.
Documentary Photography: Courses, Documentaries, books, Talks & Resources
An ongoing list of online courses, talks, books and documentaries relating to documentary work, documentary photography and photojournalism.
Newspaper Movie: The Insider
I admit I'm stretching the definition of 'Newspaper Movie' by including The Insider.
However, it's a great film, and The New York Times does play a pivotal role in the story, so it's not entirely fallacious. The Insider has been on my list to watch for a while, and with the recent sad death of Christopher Plumber, it seemed fitting to take a look; I'm glad I did.
Newspaper Movie: All the President's Men
It's a classic. With the possible exception of Citizen Kane probably the best-known film on my list.
You've probably seen it, but trust me it warrants another look, and if you've never watched it you're in for a treat.
